Activation of Kaiāulu

The theme for Hoʻokele Naʻauao 2020 is the activation of kaiāulu (community). In 2019, the lāhui Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Nation) was reawakened through the Kū Kiaʻi Mauna and Aloha ʻĀina movements. Kū Kiaʻi Mauna brought the environmental and social justice issues of Native Hawaiians to the attention of the world. Now, perhaps more than ever before, the lāhui Hawaiʻi is activated and hungry - for knowledge, for change, and for justice. We, as caretakers of Hawaiian knowledge and materials, have a responsibility to respond and become active players in this fight for justice.

We center Hoʻokele Naʻauao 2020 around the following questions:
  • In what ways can we, as information professionals, better support Indigenous communities?
  • How can we be more respectful and mindful of the voices, data, and resources that we promote?
  • How are we sharing and preserving our moʻolelo (stories/histories) for future generations?
